Founded in 1936 by Leo and Lillian Goodwin, GEICO, short for Government Employees Insurance Company, started off selling car insurance exclusively to federal government employees and military personnel in the Washington D.C. area.

GEICO eventually expanded its customer base and insurance products to non-government employees and today it has become the Nation’s 3rd largest car insurer. GEICO serves over 10 million policyholders, insures over 17 million cars on the road today and operates in all the American states, as well as its birthplace of Washington D.C.
